Nine of Swords: Predictive Tarot Card Meanings

Anxiety, Distress, Hormones, Lack of Sleep, Nightmares, Failed Attempts, Miscarriage, Hurt Feelings, Mental Health Problems

The 9 of Sword is the card of anxiety. When this card makes an appearance in a Tarot reading, it means that you are about to go through a time of great emotional anguish.

The 9 of Swords is associated with those dark nights we all go experience. We lay awake in emotional agony worried about the past, present, and future. We think about all which we regret. Usually, times like these are associated with the potential break down of a relationship, infidelity, pregnancy difficulties or plans for the future which we were so close to but which fell apart. You are (or will) experience this emotional turmoil at the time which is represented by the 9 of Swords.

Often, the 9 of Swords card is associated with females and can predict health problems which are typical of a female. Perhaps you’re going thorough something related to hormones? The  anxiety of the 9 of Swords usually goes hand in hand with hormonal problems.

If the 9 of Swords appears in an outcome position it can symbolize the sudden loss of something, but you don’t know why. You will be unsure how everything turned out as it did and you will be kept up at night worrying. You may never get the answers you crave.

Things are not always as they seem, however. Although you will spend your time imaging the worst of a situation, it is often not that bad. In some scenarios you may have nothing to fear but fear itself; you should wait until the situation unfolds so that you can learn more.

The Nine of Swords’ Historical Meaning

Previously, the 9 of Swords was read in the same fashion as it is today. However, some interpretations say that it also represents time spent in church, nuns, priests etc.  In fortune telling, seeing anything associated with clergy is viewed as an evil omen (especially in dreams). Therefore, this is probably why the 9 of Swords has religious associations.

The Nine of Swords in a Love Reading

The 9 of Swords is usually pulled by individuals who let their insecurities affect their relationship. You are paranoid about your partner and worry about the future of the relationship constantly. You expect the worst from people. While it is desirable not to be delusional, your negative attitude means that you’re not enjoying the relationship; it is not a pleasurable experience so what’s the point?

If you’re wondering what a partner is feeling about you and you pull the 9 of Swords, this can mean that they are the one who is feeling a little insecure. Perhaps they need to know that you have an interest in them? They have probably been burned in the past and need emotional reassurance.

If the 9 of Swords appears in an outcome or future position of a relationship reading, this is not a good omen; it can mean that your relationship will end at the hand of your partner and you will not get a reason why. As stated in the general description, of this card, you may never get the answers which you crave.

The Nine of Swords in a Business Reading

The 9 of Swords in a business reading is not an encouraging sign, especially if it appears in the outcome position. The 9 of Swords reflects anxiety around your business. You are advised not to take out any large loans or make any major monthly commitments because you may not be able to fulfill them.

Alternatively, the 9 of Swords can mean that, when it comes to your business, your head is your enemy. You spend too much time worrying about your company and its future that you do not take any risks. You are also very self-critical. The 9 of Swords is advising you to do some confidence work so that you can actually enjoy the freedom your business can provide.

The Nine of Swords as a Yes or No

The 9 of Swords does not answer yes or no. It is generally a neutral card because all is not as it appears to be.

The Nine of Swords as a Positive

In a positive reading, the Nine of Swords can predict;

- All is not as bad as it seems

- The worst is in your head

- You have nothing to fear but fear itself

- Your issues are hormone induced but are not a reality

The Nine of Swords as a Negative

In a more negative reading, the Nine of Swords can predict;

- Major anxiety

- Sleepless nights

- Constant stress and worry

- Female related health problems

- Nightmares
