Heartache, Divorce, Separation, Infidelity, Emotional Pain, Miscarriage, Fertility Problems
The 3 of Swords is the card of sadness. All that is emotionally painful is associated with this card.
There is no getting around the fact that the 3 of swords represents heartache. Any Tarot reader knows that when this card makes an appearance, things are going to be difficult for you. In fact, when you see the 3 of Swords you can pretty much guarantee that your emotional pain is why you have decided to perform a reading on this matter.
It is a common occurrence for the 3 of Swords to represent infidelity. The 3rd Sword symbolizes an outsider coming in-between you and your partner’s relationship.
Emotional anguish can come in many forms but roughly 95% of the time when you see this card it will be referring to a break up or a divorce. That’s not to say that this break up will last forever or is indefinite; you will be able to see if it is or isn’t in a more future part of your spread.
In some readings, the 3 of Swords can represent infertility or a miscarriage past or future. If you’re reading others, remember to be considerate when predicting things like death and miscarriage. I advise that you stay clear away from predicting miscarriages as this can cause unneeded emotional trauma and stress. There are some things which most people would rather not know and this is one of them. There is being right and there is doing the right thing.
There are times when the 3 of Swords pops up as a positive. In these cases, it means that something has been cleared to make way for something else; sometimes this may be a new opportunity.
Although the situation has been emotionally devastating, sometimes it is better to know the truth than it is to live in a lie. Therefore, another positive which can be taken from the 3 of Swords is that you know the facts so can now do something about the issues at hand.
The Three of Swords’ Historical Meaning
The 3 of Swords was read the same historically as it is currently.
The Three of Swords in a Love Reading
The meaning of the 3 of Swords is pretty self-explanatory; it is a heartache card and the prospects and outcome of your relationship is not unicorn farts and rainbow drops.
There will be love readings where you will ask what the feelings of your lover are and the 3 of Swords will come up. Similarly, the 3 of Swords will also appear in a ‘What they want to Happen’ Tarot spread position. From experience, I would say that this represents the fact that your lover subconsciously is the type of person who enjoys the drama of a break up. In the end, they will want to play the victim because they have a ‘poor me’ attitude. The 3 of Swords in a ‘feelings’ spread is rarely a good sign (I have spreads which reveal your lover's intentions in my Love Tarot Spreads e-book).
You may have pulled the 3 of Swords in a reading where you would like to know if a past ex lover is coming back. If this is the case, the three of Swords can mean that they are not returning just now because they are still hurt. However, this doesn't mean that they are gone forever; it means that, just now, they are not meant to be in your life.
The Three of Swords in a Business Reading
It is not typical to receive a 3 of Swords in a business reading. Obviously, it can mean that your plans will fail and this will make you very upset. However, more frequently, I see the 3 of Swords in business readings when people let their personal life get in the way of their business. Therefore, the 3 of Swords serves as a warning that you should separate the two and not mix business with pleasure.
