The High Priestess: Predictive Tarot Card Meanings

The Female Seeker or an Important Female, Femininity, Intuition, Mystery, Outcome not Known, Psychicism, Secrets, The Sciences

The High Priestess is the card of psychic ability. Where ever this card pops up, you can expect an increase in intuition. If you are reading another person, you will be reading another psychic or sensitive who might also work in a metaphysical or healing profession. If you’re looking for a job, you could get one in this industry in the future.

Other times, The High Priestess represents strong suspicions. Your intuition may be telling you that something in your life is not quite right. A lover or business partner may be keeping a secret from you. Sensing this dishonesty can cause this card to pop up in a reading. In the future, The High Priestess represents the time when a secret will be revealed.

Sometimes, The High Priestess holds onto that which we are not meant to know. If you keep getting The High Priestess in the future or a outcome position, you are not supposed to know the future. The Tarot will be advising you that you should work through this situation on your own, without prejudice. In these cases, the future will reveal itself in its own time.

The High Priestess' Historical Meaning

In more ancient times, The High Priestess was a card of science, education and wisdom. This card may symbolize yourself or a loved one taking an interest in these subjects or showing an interest in working in these fields.

The High Priestess used to be used as the significator for female seekers (the person receiving the reading). For more on significators, check out my How to Use a Significator and How to Select a Significator posts.

If you are male, this card can represent a strong feminine influence. It often represents an important female such a wife or a mother. Look at surrounding cards to discover the relevance of their appearance in your reading.

If you are female, The High Priestess card can represent you and the influence you have in your life. Surrounding cards can show your priorities, your motivations, your fears and strengths. Where it falls in a reading can reveal where your priorities lie. For example, if The High Priestess falls into a ‘career’ section of a spread, you could be focusing on this area of your life for that time.

The High Priestess in a Love Reading

Many people panic when The High Priestess comes up in a love Tarot reading, especially in the outcome. While it is true that this card can symbolize secrets and implies infidelity, it is more common the the card to represent what has to be revealed.

In a question specific reading (a Tarot reading with a specific question), I usually read the High Priestess as a sign that you’re not meant to know yet what is happening in the future. You should live in the present and not worry about what is going to happen. The High Priestess states that what is for you will not pass you; let the future unfold in its own time.

If you would like to know if someone else has feelings for you, the High Priestess will not allow you to know. You have to discover your potential partner's intentions in time.

There are many reasons why Tarot will not give you a straight answer for an outcome. It may be that the actions you take could greatly affect other areas of your life. Therefore, you must go with the flow and let everything come together on its own. I would wait until your relationship develops further, something major happens or after some time has passed (at least 6 weeks) before you read on this matter again.

The High Priestess in a Business Reading

If you’re performing a reading about your business or career, the High Priestess is obviously good if you’re in the spirituality or divination sector. This card can predict that you’ll be well known and achieve great things in these areas. You have divine protection.

However, if you’re not in the spirituality or divination professions then the High Priestess’s meaning for business is the same for love; just now, you’re not meant to know the outcome. My advice is that you continue on the path you’re on and let your situation play out a bit. Wait until your situation unfolds or some time has passed (at least 6 weeks) then read your business again.

There will be times when The High Priestess appears in an ‘Advisory’ or ‘Action’ part of a Tarot spread. If this is the case, then she advises that you keep your self to yourself and do not disclose your plans to anyone.

The High Priestess as a Yes or No

The High Priestess appears when you are not meant to know the outcome or the action you should take. Therefore, it is neither a yes or no from this card.
