Betrayal, Hiding your thoughts and feelings, Corruption, Dishonesty, Loneliness, Solitude, Standing Alone, Treason, Walking Alone
The Hermit is the card of loneliness. If you have received this card, it usually means that you will go through a period where you need to spend time alone.
During times of The Hermit you will find you’ll spend a lot of time by yourself. There are many reasons as to why this will be. Perhaps you will separate from a partner. Maybe you will be out of town which will result in alone time. For whatever the reason, this will be a time when you will be with your own thoughts.
There will be circumstances where loneliness is a good thing. If The Hermit appears as a positive, it means that alone time is needed so that you can get work done. This interpretation is especially true if you’re the type of person who gets easily distracted.
Sometimes, The Hermit is associated with old age and experience. The solution to a problem can be found with older, wiser people. In this case, you will have an opportunity to talk out your problems with those who have been through similar situations.
If The Hermit appears as a course of action you should take, then this means that you should walk alone. Blaze your own trail and don’t be afraid to shake the world up and do things differently.
The only place I would not want The Hermit to land is in a future or outcome position. From experience, I have found this is never a good sign as it can predict loneliness, heartache and failed attempts. If The Hermit appears in the outcome position of your spread, you might want to reassess your goals.
The Hermit’s Historical Interpretation
The pre-modern interpretations follow on from the warnings of The Chariot. While in the previous card you became a tyrant, The Hermit is the aftermath. The Hermit represents treason against you and corruption. You may have an associate who is not trust worthy. You are possibly surrounded by individuals who wish to watch your downfall.
The above interpretations warns you to be cautious of other people. Keep your thoughts, motives and plans to yourself. Don’t let anyone uncover your next moves.
The Hermit in a Love Reading
Obviously, the Hermit is not a positive card for love readings. There is no getting around the fact that this is a card of loneliness. If you’re in a relationship, this doesn’t look good for its prospects. If it hasn’t already, romance will start to go downhill.
Are you wondering how you partner is feeling? The Hermit predicts they want to be left alone. Give them their space or you could be push them away.
If you’re looking for love, the Hermit is also not desirable. The Hermit means that you will be alone for the foreseeable future. That doesn’t mean that you’re going to be by yourself forever, it just means that, for now, love is not on the cards.
The Hermit in a Business Reading
The Hermit will often appear in business readings and I read it more as a course of action you should take as opposed to a prediction.
I often see The Hermit when business people spend too much time on maintaining their image and not enough effort or energy growing their companies. For example, you’re not creating that course you want to launch but you’re updating Instagram 3 times a day. The Hermit is telling you that you need to take some time away and build things which are going to bring in money not just social approval.
The Hermit as a Yes or No
Usually the Hermit is a no or not just now.
The Hermit in a Positive Reading
In a positive reading, The Hermit can predict;
- Time alone for the better
- Gaining wisdom
- Gaining experience
- Recognition for being different
The Hermit in a Negative Reading
In a more negative reading or spread position, The Hermit can predict;
- Feeling lonely
- Acts committed against you
- Betrayal by friends and family
- Individuals who lie
- Hiding what you really think
