A Man who is a Source of Advice, Baptisms, Weddings, Church Visits, Forgiveness , Marriage, Mercy, Religious Ceremonies, Teachers, Tradition, Wisdom
The Hierophant is the card of values. With this card, you can be assured that values are of interest to you during this period.
Not only will your morality take center stage, but traditions will also play a significant role at this time of your life. The traditions in question will often reflect those which are held by your family and the society which you are a part of. The Hierophant could represent you with passing on or rejecting the status quo so look to surrounding cards for clues on if you will go along with the crowd or not.
Because of its associating with traditional values and religion, The Hierophant can symbolize certain actions which come along with these. Marriages, baptisms, and visits to religious centers could be on the cards. You could be getting married, or you will attend a wedding (as always surrounding cards will give clues).
Sometimes, the Hierophant can predict that you will visit a more experienced person for advice. Maybe an older relative or teacher has the answers you will be searching for; don’t be too proud to ask for help if you’re in need. The Hierophant gladly offers his or her support.
In general, this card is associated with mercy and goodness. Forgiveness will be given. Even if you know others will turn against you, you should always do what is morally right even if this is not what seems easiest at the time: the Hierophant demands this much.
Like all Tarot cards, there will be times The Hierophant can appear as a negative or disadvantage. In this case, the card predicts the above points but to an extreme; your love of tradition and doing the right thing will do you no favors in the future. There is also the possibility that although there are people in your life willing to give you advice it doesn’t mean that you should take it.
The Hierophant’s Historical Meaning
Historically, The Hierophant has been read pretty much the same but its pre-modern interpretation focused more so on the person who would assist the seeker. I will say that now-a-days, The Hierophant is read quite negatively but in ancient times it was a rather neutral, even, desirable card.
The Hierophant in a Love Reading
For love readings which look encouraging, The Hierophant is a symbol of union. If you’re looking to marry your partner, then receiving this card is a good sign. The catch, however, is that it can predict that you will need to adopt your partner’s way of doing things if they are particularly traditional and culture orientated.
Wondering what a potential partner is feeling towards you? Don't worry, The Hierophant reassures you that they have good intentions but that's not to say they are romantic, just yet. If you want to read more on a partner (or potential partner's) feelings and intentions, be sure to check out my Love Tarot Spreads e-book.
If you’re already married, then the Hierophant’s interpretation can be a bit more sinister; usually this means that you and your partner will have to visit a priest or relationship councilor in order to make your marriage work.
In a love reading which appears to be overly negative, this card can represent the involvement of someone else in your relationship. This person may be giving you or your partner advice which you should not be taking. The advisor doesn’t necessarily have bad intentions, but they do not have the right knowledge or experience to be dishing out their opinions on your partnership.
The Hierophant in a Business Reading
If you’re performing a career or business reading, I have found that The Hierophant has two major meanings. The first, is that it symbolizes advice.
The Hierophant, in this case, represents someone who has been through every business situation possible. You can go to them and get solid tips and tricks for how you can make your company flourish. Sometimes, this can be in the form of coaching but it can also be through course, workshops and seminars.
Alternatively, The Hierophant can advise you that you need to look to the past for inspiration. While many of the other cards recommend a fresh approach, this card wants you to play it traditional. How can you bring the past into your business? Can you make vintage cool? Tradition may be the next big thing in your industry.
The Hierophant as a Yes or No
If you’re asking whether you should forgive someone or follow in someone else’s footsteps, The Hierophant is a yes. In other situations, The Hierophant is neutral and recommends that you seek the advice of others.
The Hierophant in a Positive Reading
In a positive reading, The Hierophant can predict;
- Marriages and commitment
- The continuation of tradition
- Good advice
- Forgiveness for past transgressions
- Loving intentions
The Hierophant in a Negative Reading
In a more negative reading or spread position, The Hierophant can predict;
- Commitments you do not want
- Outdated traditions
- Judgment for lifestyle
- Being punished for doing the right thing
- Terrible advice
