Balance, Contentment, Home, Management, Peace, Sanctuary, Saving Money and Resources, Saving Time, The End of Arguments
Temperance is the card of equilibrium. During a time of Temperance, nothing will appear to be happening (in a good way). You will achieve contentment.
Contentment is good for you. I always say it is better to strive for consistent contentment than happiness, because happiness can go up and down. Temperance means both a lack of surprises and a warm feeling surrounding that knowledge.
Temperance is often quiet after the storm. After you have gone through an extremely stressful time they will find yourself in a good place where you have the space to relax and breath.
Sometimes, Temperance will appear as an advisory card. Temperance can represent a need for balance. In divination, a need for balance usually goes hand in hand with wearing yourself thin with your time or resources previously. In this case, Temperance can mean that you will finally have control of your time, finances and resources.
If you’re worried about your health, Temperance is a good omen for healing. Receiving this card is always a positive sign for medical matters.
Usually, I read Temperance as a home card. It predicts a happy home life. Where you live will be your sanctuary and you will find comfort there.
If Temperance appears as a negative, then this can indicate that you’ll have trouble around your home. If you’re having issues in the outside world, these will begin to spill over into other areas of your life.
Temperance in a discouraging position can also mean that you avoid conflict to the point that it interferes with how you stick up for yourself. In the name of peace, you’re a pushover; this causes others to walk all over you. Temperance in a negative position is advising you to claim your voice, take up space and be heard.
Temperance's Historical Meaning
Like many of the other Tarot cards in the Major Arcana, Temperance's meaning hasn't changed much over the years. In ancient times it also represented management and balance. I will say, however, that compared to the modern interpretation the traditional meaning of Temperance seems to be more interested in the management of finances than it does with balancing emotions.
Temperance in a Love Reading
Temperance is positive for love readings. If you're not yet living with your partner, this card is a good omen for cohabitation. If you're already living together this card just basically means that you'll have a happy home life. Temperance can sometimes predict that you'll make your home your 'nest' through gardening and decoration.
If you're single Temperance predicts a future where you're content with your circumstances. It doesn't necessarily promise you will or will not meet someone, all that it states is that you'll be happy whatever happens in your love life.
Are you interested to know if a potential mate cares about you or not? Temperance foretells good feelings so this card is a positive. However, I would warn that your fancy person doesn't like drama or strong displays of emotions so try to control yourself in their presence.
Temperance in a Business Reading
In a business related Tarot reading I would default to the meaning which advises you to manage resources. You should be sure to balance your check books and divide your time among important matters. Try to avoid doing repetitive tasks just because they're easy.
Although Temperance is a favorable card and can reflect contentment in your business, if you're looking to grow I would be concerned. I would especially worry if my business is already doing well.
If your business is not doing great and you have worries Temperance can predict an end to your stresses, which is expectable. However, if your business is already going fine and you're looking to expand Temperance is bad news because it means that everything will remain the same. It's not a card of growth and excitement, it's a card of equilibrium. Therefore, you may have to work out how you can push past the same-old-same-old and achieve better results.
