Five of Pentacles: Predictive Tarot Card Meanings

I’m going to warn you straight off the back, I don’t interpret the 5 of Pentacles in the same way most modern readers do. I like to mix ancient and modern Tarot meanings, because I feel like this gives more accurate readings.

In a Tarot card reading, The Five of Pentacles in a spread can be a symbol of love and poverty. This post includes a vintage and modern fortune telling meanings of The 5 of Pentacles, ideal for the advanced reader or those just learning the cards. These interpretations can be used with any of the decks (Rider Waite, Marseilles etc). Cards used in post are from The Wooden Tarot Deck.

In modern times, the 5 of Pentacles is the card of poverty and in financial readings, I read this card this way. If you have received this card and your question is related to money, work or business, then you’re in trouble; in these cases, I would read this card as a bad omen predicting loss.

For monetary readings, there will be a great loss of money, sometimes to the point of bankruptcy. If you’re not ‘money savvy’ you should speak to someone who can help you with your affairs otherwise all will be lost.

In health readings, the 5 of Pentacles is also not good. as indicated by the Rider Waite Smith Tarot design, this card can predict both injuries and illnesses. Take care of your health and look after yourself.

However, for love related readings, I always give the 5 of Pentacles a positive meaning. Pre-RWS the 5 of Coins (Pentacles) was said by card readers to be the card of affection. Good relations between lovers is indicated. Therefore, in love readings this card should be read as representing good love affairs unless you’re arguing with your lover over your financial predicament.

The Five of Pentacles’ Historical Meaning

As stated above, the 5 of Pentacles was previously the card of love and partnership. The card can also represent good friends. I am unsure why this card meaning has changed so drastically over time but I suspect it has something to do with the Golden Dawn’s attempt to align card meanings with astrology.

The Five of Pentacles in a Love Reading

As previously stated, the 5 of Pentacles was a good omen for love and, therefore, I always read it to represent a good outcome in relationships. Your partnership is one of care and mutual understanding and the future looks good. If you’re wondering what someone’s feelings are towards you do not worry; they have nothing but loving intentions. The Five of Pentacles in a Business Reading

Unlike for love, I do not read the 5 of Pentacles in a positive light if I am reading for business or career matters. The 5 of Pentacles is a very bad financial omen predicting devastation and even poverty. Tremendous amounts of effort will be needed to salvage your business, if there even is anything left worth saving.

If you are planning to execute a project, the 5 of Pentacles is a warning that you should not go there. Pick another course of action, because the road you are on leads to nothing but misery.

The Five of Pentacles as a Yes or No

For love readings the 5 of Pentacles is a yes. For everything else, the 5 of Pentacles is a no.
