The Five of Wands: Predictive Tarot Card Meanings

Challenges, Obstacles, Fights, Disagreements, Resistance, Conflict

The 5 of Wands is the Tarot card of competitions. When the 5 of Wands card rears it’s head, you can confidently predict that you’re about to engage in competition with a rival at some point in the future.

Sometimes, this card can predict friendly competiveness; the guys down at the bar with their eyes on the same girl, the football teams, the co-workers after the same promotion. The 5 of Wands is a brilliant card for those involved in competitive sports. The 5 of Wands embodies the energy of sportsmanship.

In a Tarot card reading, The Five of Wands in a spread can be a symbol of challenge and competition. This post includes vintage and modern fortune telling meanings of the 5 of Wands, ideal for the advanced reader or those just learning the cards. These interpretations can be used with any of the decks (Rider Waite, Marseilles etc.) Cards used in this post are from The Wooden Tarot deck.

Other times, battles may not be so fun. Based on surrounding cards in your spread, you can tell the tone of this competitiveness.

The 5 of Wands speaks of the strife but not the over all results. With this tension comes an opportunity for you to prove yourself. When the push comes to shove, are you about to sink or swim?

The 5 of Wands often warns of conflict which may not appear so serious at the time. However, jealously can soon turn ugly. If you’re the victim of someone else’s envy this is good; it means you’re doing something right. However, if you’re the one hating on others, this could spell trouble if you’re not channeling your emotions correctly.

There will be times when the conflict of the 5 of Wands is imaginary, not real. It can appear at times when you’re too busy watching what other people are doing instead of getting to work in building your own empire. If this sounds like you, use your jealousy as a compass which highlights the things you want and go from there.

It can be pretty frustrating when the 5 of Wands appears in a future or outcome position because the ending will not be revealed. You’re not going to be told the results of the battle as, for now, only the journey is written.

The Five of Wands’  Historical Meaning

Historically, the 5 of Wands was a very good card as it predicted financial gain, gold and money. Therefore, if you are competing for something the 5 of Wands is a good card to receive because it can symbolize the rewards you’ll receive.

The Five of Wands in a Love Reading

The 5 of Wands usually makes an appearance in love Tarot readings where the object of your affection is unsure of their feelings. There could be another interest (or another person) in the picture competing for their affections. Therefore, be wary of this in the future.

The 5 of Wands does not say if you will ultimately end up with your love interest or not; its meaning is elusive. Basically, the cards are predicting that you will have to fight for your partner's affection either now or in the future. However, your cards cannot reveal for now if your efforts will ultimately pay off. Therefore, I recommend you wait until you have more information and then read on this matter again in the future.

If you're wondering whether your ex is coming back or not, the 5 of Wands can serve as a warning that getting them to return will require effort on your part. Your ex is currently focused on other areas and aspects of their life. If you want more detail on your past lover and yours relationship, be sure to check out my Love Tarot Spreads e-book!

The Five of Wands in a Business Reading

In a business reading, the 5 of Wands speaks of your competition. If you’re thinking that you have a cutting edge idea which no one can compete with you’re wrong; you do have competitors and they are worthy opponents. You will have to spend some time hustling and doing some market research to figure out how you can outsmart others in your industry.

It is rewarding to have friends in the same business as you. However, the 5 of Wands is a warning to remember that they are still your competition: you might see them as alleys but that doesn’t mean they see you the same way. Keep your mouth shut and do not be spilling any of your company secrets.
