The Nine of Wands: Predictive Tarot Card Meanings

Delays, Sickness, Injury, Ordered, Break Offs, Cancelations, Taking a Long Time

The 9 of Wands is the Tarot card which appears when you want to give up. You feel as though the end is nowhere in sight. And it is true, there is much work to be done before you can turn your back on this situation.

The 9 of Wands can mark little setbacks which accumulate and weigh heavily on you. The 9 of Wands in a Tarot reading will predict one thing happening after another. For example, if you’re going on holiday your flight will be delayed. Then your taxi from the airport will get mysteriously canceled. Then it’ll take forever to get you checked into the hotel. The 9 of Wands is, generally, a pain in the ass.

In a Tarot card reading, The Nine of Wands in a spread can be a symbol of delays and setbacks. This post includes vintage and modern fortune telling meanings of the 9 of Wands, ideal for the advanced reader or those just learning the cards. These interpretations can be used with any of the decks (Rider Waite, Marseilles etc.) Cards used in this post are from The Divina Tarot Deck.

It is also common to see the 9 of Wands after arguments and stalemates with friends, family and lovers. The 9 of Wands can mark a major fall out. You do not know where you stand with the individual you have had conflict with and will be unsure how to proceed.

If you’re ambitious, the 9 of Wands warns that what you’re wanting to achieve will take a very long time, much longer than you have anticipated. You will feel as though everything is standing in the way of what you want and nothing will go right for you.

The 9 of Wand’s Rider Waite Smith designs speaks volumes and reflects the fact that it can predict illness and injury. You should take extra percussions and not be too careless during the time which the 9 of Wands represents. Sometimes, however, the card can represent emotional pain.

The 9 of Wands is often pulled by people who have a lot of emotional baggage from their upbringing or previous relationships. You’re a people pleaser who wants others to like you because, deep down, you feel unworthy. Therefore, you’re the type of person who others walk over and take advantage of.

On the opposite end of the scale, the 9 of Wands can appear if you’re unwilling to let anyone into your inner circle. You do not trust easily and are suspicious of others. The 9 of Wands, however, is a sign that your mistrust may be justified, which is a positive aspect of the card; you’re not quick to let the snakes into your backyard.

Another positive face of the 9 of Wands, is that is symbolizes preparation. Perhaps you’re the person who keeps scrapping plans because you know the end product isn’t going to be amazing. Your intuition and Tarot cards are telling you that you’re correct in your feelings. You must wait until the time is right and you have all of the facts.

The Nine of Wand’s Historical Meaning

Historically, the 9 of Wands was read in a similar fashion as it is today; it is a card which reflects a need for order and willpower.

The Nine of Wands in a Love Reading

The 9 of Wands is not a positive card to receive for most types of love readings.

I often see the 9 of Wands with seekers who do a lot of waiting around on their lovers. You’re constantly waiting on them to call you, waiting for them to text you back, waiting for them to show up. They let you down time and time again. If they are not behaving this way yet, they will in the future if the 9 of Wands appears in an outcome position; this represents you hanging around waiting for them to change.

It seems that the ball is in your partner’s court and they control the destiny of your relationship. You are unsure if they want to be with you or not, because they leave you with nothing but confusion. Although you know you could be happier with someone else you are not confident enough to let them go just yet. You think that if you just hold on that little bit longer they will come around.

If you’re wondering what a potential partner’s feelings are towards you, the 9 of Wands is a sign that they see you as an option, not as a priority. They like you to be there when it is suitable for them, not you. Your Tarot cards are advising you that there is better out there than someone who you have to chase after. If you're questioning your lover's commitment levels and would like to read on it, this is something I cover in my Love Tarot Spreads e-book.

The Nine of Wands in a Business Reading

The 9 of Wands will appear in a business reading when you feel like throwing in the towel. You will feel like giving up because everything will be going wrong. The business of business will not be all that you hoped it was.

The 9 of Wands serves as a reminder that business isn’t for everyone. If you have tried it out and do not like it, the 9 of Wands is telling you that you can always quit. If you feel as though everything is getting too much there is nothing wrong with deciding this isn’t the life you want.

The 9 of Wands can also symbolize a project which doesn’t do so well, especially if this is a matter you’re reading on. It won’t be smooth sailing and the results will not be what you have expected. You will feel as though the universe is against you and, in this case, it might just be.

The Nine of Wands as a Yes or No
